Mr Universe assaulted by police during low blood sugar episode!

Ok, can you believe this.

Mr. Universe or Doug Burns was clubbed and beaten in the head and body by police when a security guard at the movie theatre he was in thought that Doug was intoxicated because he was in the middle of a low blood sugar episode.

If anyone is diabetic like myself, you know how scary it can be.
Your confused and not quite sure whats going on.
I had such a bad episode that my sister gave me food in order to put my sugar back up. I just sat there and I didn't even know what to do with it.
You pretty much feel like a weak angry drunk, so i could see why the police might of thought that Doug was drunk but I mean come on, you don't just go in and beat someone, try and de-esclate the problem first.

If you are out with someone that is a diabetic, make sure you go with them if you know they are having a low, or you may end up losing a friend to the police.

Food supply or Genetics?

This is regarding an article from the UK but the problem is exactly the same in North America.
Here is an interesting layout of how bad the prevalence of Diabetes is getting.

This is data collected in the United States from 2005:

Total Prevalence of Diabetes Among People Aged 20 Years or Older, United States, 2005

Age 20 years or older: 20.6 million; 9.6 percent of all people in this age group have diabetes.

Age 60 years or older: 10.3 million; 20.9 percent of all people in this age group have diabetes.

Men: 10.9 million; 10.5 percent of all men aged 20 years or older have diabetes.

Women: 9.7 million; 8.8 percent of all women aged 20 years or older have diabetes.

1.5 million new cases of diabetes were diagnosed in people aged 20 years or older in 2005.

You can see from this data that diabetes is only getting worse. These number are only from people that have been diagnosed, there is still a very large number of people that are undiagnosed.

This article shows information regarding the amount of people that are undiagnosed.

Something has to be done about this ongoing plague, but with the number of people who are getting this disease, doesn't it make you question the susceptibility?

There are many compelling research studies stating that Diabetes is genetic, but with all of the information about how many people have it and how many people are still undiagnosed, sounds like we should be questioning our food supply if you ask me.

I believe it is high and continous levels of stress or our food supply, well I am pretty sure that is how I obtained diabetes.

If they firmly believe that diabetes is obtained through genetics, then where the hell did I get it, because not one person in all of the generations in my family have diabetes.

Food supply or genetics?..... you be the judge.

Novacell, one of the top stem cell research companies has been able to create some amazing things from stem cells such as these examples mentioned in the article.

Obviously this would be amazing if it were to actually come into production.
But like most scientific tests, these things take time and money.

The other problem is the never ending embryo debate.
Although late last year or early this year, stem cell companies were able to create stem cells from human skin cells, instead of using the embryo.

If the embryo debate causes legal issues then could they not use the human skin cells?

Another potential cure for Diabetes.

I dont know about you, but with all of these potential cures for Diabetes, one of them has to become a reality.

A quote from the article:

"Scientists say a painless treatment for type 1 or juvenile diabetes may only be a few years away, after a major breakthrough in stem cell technology."

They are saying that scientists have created insulin producing cells from human embryonic stem cells.

Another quote:

"The scientists say the approach could lead to a renewable source of cells for the treatment of diabetes and eliminate the need for insulin injections."

This would lead to many companies being put out of business like NovoNordisk.

But think of all of the lives that it would save every year and how many people could lead a normal life without any worries and without 4 or so injections of insulin a day.


Whats more important..... the businesses or human lives?

Substance in seaweed... possible Diabetes cure?

This is the stuff that I love to hear but will it ever become a reality for us hopefuls?

According to scientists the substance "alginate" that was extracted from the seaweed was able to protect islet cells, or the beta cells.
They experimented with pig islets and wrapped them in this jelly like substance "arginate"
Apparently these cells were able to survive without the immune system destroying them.

If transplants are done in the usual fashion humans need to take immune supressing drugs for the rest of their lives, which unfortunately lead to an array of other devistating side effects according to research.

If this technique of wrapping the cells in aginate works, it would lead to a cure since humans would not need to take immune supressing drugs and we can finally lead a normal life.

Is this going to be another hopeless experiment or will it become reality?

Old Diabetes News - Dec 2006

I wanted to finally get some news up here about diabetes.
There is alot of new stuff but i wanted to bring back an old news article to see what everyone thinks.

This particular article pertains to the potential diabetes cure that was found at the Sick Kids Hospital.

They were using mice like in most medical testing but in this case, this is what they did to find the potential cure:

"Diabetic mice became healthy virtually overnight after researchers injected a substance to counteract the effect of malfunctioning pain neurons in the pancreas"

This was published in December 2006 and it was big news to alot of hopeful diabetics........ I havent heard anything pertaining to this since that date. Do trials really take that long, because if they are looking for someone to use, I will volunteer!

How can news this big dissapear and never be heard about for 2 years so far.
Is it because if they do find a cure, so many business will be out of business, or are they really stuck and they dont know how to make it work in humans?

I don't know about all of you, but I have been looking for a cure since the day i was diagnosed!

Happy Family Day

My apologies for this weekends posts, I was slacking a bit because of my Birthday.
I went away for the weekend with no access to a computer, hence there were no updates.

Anyway I wanted to say happy family day to everyone who has that holiday!
Hopefully it was enjoyed by everyone!

Fight the Herp

Good old Herpes Simplex, or what some people like to refer to as cold sores.
Everyone hates them, and if you happen to enjoy them then I don't really know what to say, but good for you.

If you are like me and you get cold sores once an a while, your probably looking for ways to be rid of them rather quickly.

What most people do at the first sign of the well known tingle sensation, is grab some ice and apply it to the spot where it tingles.
This will bring mild and most likely temporary relief.

If you would like to get rid of the cold sore as fast as you can, I have a few methods.

Start by applying something like, oil of oregano or a product like super lysine by Quantum health. Lysine of any kind will help prevent outbreaks and inhibit herpes activity.

So you can take L-Lysine as a supplement in capsule form or as mentioned above you can also use a product with Lysine in it like super lysine.

Health tip: Keep your immune system in top notch shape by taking the usual vitamin C, zinc or just eating a healthy diet.

Dont get sick, or atleast diminish the symptoms

Oil of Oregano, some of you may have heard about it some of you may not.
If you rarely get sick you are probably already using it.

Anyone can use this product but I strongly recommend this to diabetics as well since diabetics have a supressed immune system......thats what the doctors say anyway.
I have been a diabetic for 2 years and I have had 1 cold that lasted about 4 days.

Oil of oregano has two main active ingredients that fight illness.
One is Carvacrol and the other is Thymol. Both are excellent compounds that destroy pathogens, fight viral infections as well as any fungal infections.

There are many types of Oregano to choose from, some are the same and some are not. I have personally used Oreganol P73, and I am currently using St.Francis Oreganum Plus.

If you are taking these oils internally or sublingual neither of them taste good but the P73 is easier to take.

Your quickest route to health and recovery from sickness could be at a local health food store near you.

Health tip: As a viral fighter, this can also be applied to cold sores, and as a fungal fighter this can even be applied to or around your nails if you get fungal infections.

This is my first blog and I want to welcome you and thank you for showing the same interest in nutrition that I have.

I will do my best at updating and sharing with you information and reviews on a wide range of health products.

I will also be posting about diabetes, and the life threatening health problems that can follow if it is not taken care of.

Most of my posts will retain to natural products and natural medicine as opposed to the typical western medicine literature.

I believe there is room for openess when is comes to natural and western medicine, because I believe that we need both to succeed in health.
